Salmon Creek 5-Miler

By Linda Phaby

I really do love this race. No permits, no course marking, no big expectations by anyone. I get to go to the toy store for prizes, then I get to spend the day with my feet in the sand in the company of really great people.

As for the race itself, Ty Strange repeated the year 2000 by returning to the seaweed finish line first (29:52), over a minute ahead of #2 Mark Curren. Val Sell was the first female finisher in a quick 34:53. I’m amazed at the speed of this group—17 out of 25 came in under 40 minutes.

This year the very special first place “trophies” were caveman and hula dancer troll dolls. I hope Ty and Val have put them alongside their other coveted traditional medals and awards.

I want to thank Lisa Isabeau for stepping in to help in Joe’s absence (and also for continuing to take tomatoes and cucumbers off our hands). Also, thank you Keith Maurer for travelling all the way from the Sierra foothills to help me at the finish line.

See you all next year.
