Susan Vasquez Leads the Women / Kenny Brown Repeats for the Men
Summer-like weather prevailed for this year’s run for the Carrots, as over 40 intrepid souls took to the trails and bike paths of Spring Lake Park.
The Bunny Hop field was composed entirely of girls this year with nary a boy in sight. Perhaps they were intimidated by the competition? After five years I finally managed to have the same course run by the kids two years in a row! As such, the kids ran the same distance, which was precisely somewhere in the near vicinity of around 1K sorta. Angie Curry and Brianna Tibbetts battled it out over the course with Angie prevailing by a mere four seconds at the end for the win. Jillian Van Riper, only four years old took third. Lauren Feldman, Danielle Ashworth and Kara Curry all ran very well, rounding out the remaining three positions. All of the girls ran great! Come on boys, you need to come out next year and give these wonderful girls a run for their money! Good job kids!
This year, and for the first time the men and women ran together at the ‘Derby. There was some grumbling due to a slightly shortened start to avoid gopher holes, but generally everything went well (I think) as I heard no complaints about the more crowded than usual start.
Kenny Brown, course record holder and last years winner went out hard and cruised to an impressive 16:36 for the men. Kenny was followed by Ian Messier (15) 18:28 and Steven Starkweather (40) 18:40 to round out the top three men.
Susan Vasquez, lead all women as she set the second fastest time ever for women in the 40-49 age group with a very fast time of 20:08. Susan was followed closely by Val Sell (36) in 20:15, who was in a dead heat with Tori Meredith who set a new mark for the third fastest time ever for women in the 40-49 age group.
Honorable mention to Quin Coughlin (11) who ran an incredible 19:25 to place first for boys under 12, fifth overall. Another incredible performance was turned in by Jaime Feldman (9) running 23:44 to place first for girls under 12. These are awe-inspiring times!
Other age group winners included Dan Preston (50-59) 19:39, and Mort Gray (60-69) in 22:33 for the men, and Melanie Lorin (20-29) 20:31, and Leslie Howell (50-59) in 31:39 for the women. It should be mentioned that Melanie is now second all time for women in the 20-29 age group. A great run indeed!
I would like to salute all of the other runners, unmentioned here, who toed the line and gave it their all. You are the heart and soul of our sport and you make us all very proud!
